There’s nothing like a delicious pasta sauce to serve on your spaghetti, use as pizza sauce, or in other favorite recipes like these pizza zucchini boats. This recipe uses canned tomatoes and tomato paste making it the easiest way to quickly throw together a homemade sauce that still tastes amazing!

Homemade marinara sauce is easier to make than you might think, and uses affordable pantry ingredients along with fresh herbs to create the perfect sauce that simply can’t be bought from the grocery store. 

The best thing about homemade sauce is you can make a double batch and have plenty to freeze and save for next time! You’ll have tons of savory sauce every time you are ready to make your favorite Italian dish.

Supplies Needed

  • Medium saucepan
  • Cutting board


  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 8 garlic cloves
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
  • 1 (6 ounce) can of tomato paste
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can water (from tomato can)
  • non-stick cooking spray
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • pepper (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon Splenda or Stevia sugar
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Additional Ingredients

​Try adding fresh tomatoes, red pepper flakes, ground turkey, or Italian sausage to give your easy homemade spaghetti sauce lots of extra flavor and texture! Just remember this will add to the calories and weight watchers points. 


Spray pan with cooking spray and heat over medium-low heat.

Add onion and pepper and saute for 5 minutes, spraying pan/veggies 2 times

Simmer on low for 45 minutes

Top over thin spaghetti noodles or use as a dipping sauce!

  2. I also scanned the ingredients and used 4 servings. It comes out to 2 points per serving because of the diced tomatoes and tomato paste. (From Walmart; Great Value brand).
