I love seeking out the best ways for organizing small spaces on a budget!

We recently moved from a 3,000 square foot home to a 1,019 square foot rental house to be able to pay off debt fast!

I really enjoy having a smaller space. It forced us to get rid of a lot of clutter, keeping only what is important.

We have three kids, so we knew our family of five would be a tight fit in our new small space!

Organizing is essential to our success and sanity in our new home, but it can also get pretty expensive buying all those cute containers and gear!

There are several low cost organizing hacks that you can do to make a big impact on your small space.

I’m sharing my best tips for organizing small spaces on a budget!

How to Organize Small Spaces on a Budget

Keep only what you love

The first and best thing you can do to keep your small space organized and clutter free is to get rid of all the stuff you don’t love!

It feels amazing to get rid of giant trash bags full of clutter.  If you take the time to go room to room and clear out things that are just taking up space, you’ll be surprised how much you can get rid of.

You can even make extra cash by having a garage sale.  We made almost $2,000 getting rid of our unwanted items at our garage sale!

If you haven’t read “The Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo, I highly recommend it!  I’m not an expert at sticking to her method, but she has some great tips for determining which items you should keep in your home…and what to toss out!

Shop at The Dollar Tree

I am amazed at all of the $1 organizing tools that can be found at the Dollar Tree!

I have spent countless amounts of money on more expensive bins from Target or The Container Store for triple the price!

Everything Needs a Place

One of the best tips to organizing your small space is to make sure everything has a place in your home.

If things don’t have a place, they will just end up on the kitchen counter or getting shoved in a junk drawer.

When you are trying to maximize a small space, you need to assign every item a home.

Mail and paper clutter are something we have always struggled with, and don’t even get me started on misplaced keys!

I installed this adorable mail holder with key hooks to keep everything perfectly organized. It even has a small ledge for my husband to put his pocket contents when he walks in the door!

Also, having a sweet spot to display the kids artwork, will allow you to enjoy it for a few weeks until the next batch comes in and you can discreetly recycle the old to make room for the new!

Dressers inside Closets

Dressers are a necessary furniture item to store the massive amounts of clothing that our three children own, but I noticed that they really take up a lot of play space!

Moving the dressers into the closets free up space in a small room.

I also worry less about small children trying to climb up and tip them over.

Take advantage of Vertical Space

When you don’t have a ton of square footage, think outside the box and utilize your vertical space!

If you’re short on cabinet space, open shelves are an easy and inexpensive way to add storage options.

Add cute bins and baskets to disguise medications, towels, and extra toiletries or cleaning supplies.

We use bunk beds to allow our kids to share a room, enabling us to live in a 3 bedroom house with 3 kids.

In the playroom, use wall mounted floating bookshelves to save space.

Use Wall Hooks everywhere!

We use Command hooks in every room of the house!

This goes back to my point about everything having a place.

Inside of Doors and Cabinets

You can get seriously creative with the inside of doors and cabinets.

With the right hooks and gear, you can utilize this area for much needed small space organization!

I’m a wife, mom of three, doctor, and blogger! In 2018, I decided to turn my mom blog, into a personal finance blog so others could follow along on our journey to pay off over HALF a MILLION dollars in student loan and practice start up debt. I hope you enjoy following along, and maybe even find some inspiration along the way.
